about

March of Dimes

This album was a coming together of long term colleagues, a long term venue, a long term engineer, a long term curator, a long term friend, drummer, painter/humorist, a long term radio colleague, and a wonderful public. This album was recorded and produced by Dick Lucas who was a presence in the Dutch music scene as a recordist and tech wizard who documented numerous projects and broadcasts by our ensemble as well as documenting a huge segment of the archive of Dutch Creative Improvised Music. In addition, Dick released the recording on his label and always entertained us with a bone dry wit.
Han Bennink, a cornerstone of creative expression in Holland for decades was so generous in making a beautiful cover design for this and many other albums. The Bim Huis has been a fabled home away from home in Holland for me since 1978 and Huup Von Riel has been making the program there for decades as well. Vera Vingerhoeds has produced live radio recordings for VPRO radio for decades as well and has always been a welcoming presence at the Bim Huis and various festivals throughout our careers. To all these folks a huge thank you.
This live performance was captured in a recording made on September 26, 1997 direct to 2 track DAT. It was one date in a three week tour that had us bounding up and down the European continent sharing our work with the public. The cosmic order present a perfect context for us to explore our newest compositions in a relaxed, intense and concentrated atmosphere. With the assistance of an engaged and critically discriminating audience the music flowed.
The ultimate thank you goes to my dear compadres Gerry Hemingway and Ray Anderson for four plus decades of human and musical interaction. I sincerely hope that you enjoy the music in all ways possible.
