Mark Helias: Music for Big Band

Recorded April 2006 in Hamburg, Germany by The NDR Big Band.

Most of the pieces were quite contemporaneous with the recording except for “Beside Myself “which had been composed while I was still in graduate school, 1975-76. The rehearsal and recording period was unusually short due to other commitments for the band. Also, upon arrival for the first rehearsal I was told that the score and parts that I shipped weeks before had not arrived. I spent the first half of the first day printing all of the parts from my computer. Considering the short amount of rehearsal time the musicians did a credible job. The brass sections in particular were strong (good lead trumpet and wonderful trombones) and the trombone solos on “Handycam” and “21” were exceptionally soulful and interesting. The guitarist, who only played on 21, came in like a spectre and played beautifully on the track. Luckily for me I was able to bring drummer Michael Sarin for the session. His ability to maintain the feel of a small band in the large ensemble helped to maintain the musical intimacy in the rhythm section. The pianist was also very enthusiastic and engaging in every piece. He was a joy to work with.
I am very gratified to have had these pieces realized in sound.
